MEMBER STARTER KIT

THREE CHECKLISTS EVERY BASEBALL & SOFTBALL FAMILY SHOULD HAVE

1. Picking a team

  • What does a full year really cost — fees, uniforms, travel, tournaments and hotels?
  • How many practices compared to games? Ask for last season's schedule.
  • Who coaches, and what is their experience with this age group?
  • How is playing time decided? Is it written down anywhere?
  • Do younger players get to learn more than one position?
  • What is the plan for pitch counts, rest and arm care?
  • How and when do coaches talk with parents?
  • Talk to two families who left the team, not just ones who stayed.

2. Before you pay a hitting coach

  • Ask what they will work on first and why. A good coach can explain it simply.
  • Do they film swings and show you what they see?
  • Is there a plan beyond the next lesson, and how will progress be measured?
  • Do they train the athlete, pitch recognition and approach — or only the swing?
  • Do they give work to do between lessons?
  • Are prices, packages, cancellations and refunds clear up front?
  • Your player should leave understanding the “why,” not just a list of drills.
  • Red flag: guaranteed scholarships or draft talk, or “my way is the only way.”

3. What a good practice looks like

  • Most players are moving most of the time — very little standing in lines.
  • Lots of swings, ground balls and throws per player, not one turn and sit.
  • Game-like work: live pitching, situations, and competitions with a score.
  • Every part of practice has a purpose the players are told.
  • A real warm-up and throwing progression before anyone throws hard.
  • Mistakes are coached, not punished.
  • Players leave knowing one thing to work on at home.
