BAT SIZE FINDER

The wrong bat costs money and slows the swing. Enter your player's height, weight and age to get a starting length and drop, plus the stamp your league requires. Then try it in the hand before you buy.

Sizes here come from manufacturer charts and are a starting point, not a prescription. Fit in the hand matters more than any chart.

    The in-store test

    • The arm test: have your player hold the bat by the handle straight out to the side. If they can't hold it for about 20 seconds without it dipping, it's too heavy.
    • The swing test: watch a few dry swings. If the barrel drags or the hands drop, go lighter or shorter.
    • Don't buy to grow into it. A bat that's too big slows the swing and builds bad habits. Buy for this season.
    • Check the stamp before you pay. An illegal bat can't be used no matter what it cost. Look for the certification mark on the taper or barrel and compare it to your league's approved list.

    Bat rules are changing (2026–2029)

In 2026, USA Baseball took over the BBCOR standard, which is being renamed "USA BBCOR." The performance standard doesn't change. Bats with the new mark are expected in stores by mid-2027. College baseball will accept current BBCOR bats through its 2028 season. High school (NFHS) has adopted USA BBCOR and will also allow USABat −4 to −6 bats starting in 2028. Current BBCOR bats stay legal in high school. Little League says the change doesn't affect its 2026 tournaments or 2027 season.

    Common questions

    What does bat drop mean?

Drop is the bat's length in inches minus its weight in ounces. A 30-inch bat that weighs 20 ounces is a −10. The bigger the number, the lighter the bat feels for its length.

What bat certification does my league need?

It depends on the league. Little League Minors and Majors require the USA Baseball (USABat) stamp, USSSA baseball uses its own 1.15 BPF stamp through 13U (BBCOR or wood at 14U national events and 15U and up), and high school and college baseball require BBCOR. Starting in 2028, high school will also allow USABat −4 to −6 bats. Fastpitch has its own certifications. Always check your league's current approved list.

Is it OK to buy a bat a little big so they can grow into it?

Usually not. A bat that is too long or heavy slows the swing and can build bad habits. Buy the size that fits now, and if your player can't hold it straight out to the side for about 20 seconds, it's probably too heavy.
