How to check the fit
- The close test: your player should be able to squeeze the glove shut with one hand. If they can't, it's too big or too stiff.
- Snug, not tight: fingers should reach near the ends of the finger stalls, with no more than a finger's width of room at the wrist.
- Smaller is faster: middle infielders want a smaller glove for quick transfers. Outfielders and first basemen use bigger gloves for reach.
- Don't buy to grow into it. A glove that's too big is hard to control and builds bad habits.
Catcher's mitts and first base mitts
Catcher's mitts are measured around the outside (circumference), so they show bigger numbers like 31" or 33". First base mitts have no finger stalls and a long, shallow pocket for scooping throws. For young players who play everywhere, one utility glove in the infield range is plenty.
Common questions
What size glove for a 10-year-old?
Most 8 to 10 year olds use about 10.5" to 11.25" in the infield and up to 12" in the outfield. A catcher's mitt for that age is about 30" to 31".
Is a softball glove different from a baseball glove?
Yes. Fastpitch gloves usually have a deeper pocket for the bigger ball and often a narrower hand opening. Fastpitch sizes run a little larger at the same age.
How do you measure a glove?
Measure from the top of the index finger down to the heel of the glove, along the inside. Catcher's mitts are measured around the outside instead.
