Why is my kid a different age in every league?
Each organization picks its own "age determination date." Little League Baseball uses a player's age on August 31 of the season year. Little League Softball uses age on December 31 of the year before. Many fastpitch organizations, including USSSA and Babe Ruth Softball, now use age on August 31 of the year before the season. Travel baseball varies: some events use an April 30 or May 1 cutoff, others August 31.
That's why a player with a summer birthday can be "too old" for one league and right in the middle of another. When you're choosing a team, compare using the same league's rule.
Playing up
Most leagues let a player move up an age group but not down. Moving up can be great for a skilled player, but make sure they'll still get real reps and playing time. More on that in How to Choose a Travel Baseball Team.
Common questions
What is Little League age?
For baseball, it's the player's age on August 31 of the current year. For softball, it's the player's age on December 31 of the previous year.
Is travel ball age the same as Little League age?
Not always. Travel organizations set their own cutoffs. Many fastpitch groups use August 31 of the prior year, and some baseball events still use April 30 or May 1. Check the rules for the specific tournament or organization.
Can my child play in a younger age group?
Almost never. Leagues allow playing up, not down, except for rare exceptions approved by the league.
